If every walk feels like water-skiing behind your dog, a no-pull harness is one of the quickest fixes you can buy. It won't replace training, but it makes training far easier and takes pressure off your dog's neck.
How a no-pull harness works
The secret is the front clip. When the lead attaches at the chest, a dog that surges forward is gently turned sideways, back towards you. Pulling simply stops working, so most dogs give it up. A back clip does the opposite: it lets a dog lean into the harness like a sled dog.
That's why we suggest a harness with a front ring, or one with both a front and a back ring, so you can switch once your dog walks nicely.
Strap style or padded vest?
- Strap harnesses are light, cool in summer and quick to put on. The classic example is the PetSafe Easy Walk.
- Padded vests spread pressure over a wider area and often add a grab handle and reflective trim, which is handy for big dogs and evening walks.
Getting the fit right
- Measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind the front legs, and use the maker's size chart.
- You should fit two fingers under every strap, no more.
- The chest strap should sit across the breastbone, not low on the legs, where it can rub.
- Check again after a week; straps loosen as they wear in.
Pair it with a little training
A harness works best when you also reward your dog for walking beside you. Keep tiny treats in a pouch, and mark the good moments with a clicker or a cheerful "yes!".

If your dog pulls because of fear or reactivity to other dogs, a qualified trainer is well worth the money. A harness gives you control, and a trainer helps with the cause.
