Litter box problems are one of the most common reasons cats end up at the vet or rehomed, and the litter itself is often part of the story. Cats are picky, so the goal is simple: choose something your cat likes and that's easy for you to keep clean.
Clumping clay
Clumping clay is the most popular choice for good reason. Urine forms solid clumps you can scoop out completely, so the rest of the box stays fresh.
Look for: hard clumps that don't crumble, low dust, and no added scent. Many cats avoid perfumed litter, and a clean box shouldn't need it.
Plant-based litters
Corn, wheat, pine and paper litters are lighter to carry and better for the planet. The best ones clump well too. They usually cost more per month, and some cats need a gradual switch.
How to switch litters
Cats dislike sudden change. Mix the new litter into the old over about a week, increasing it a little each day. If your cat starts going elsewhere, slow down.
The box rules that matter as much as the litter
- One box per cat, plus one. Two cats? Three boxes, ideally in different rooms.
- Scoop at least once a day. It's the biggest single thing you can do for odour.
- Bigger is better. Most commercial boxes are small; your cat should be able to turn around easily.
- Quiet spot, easy exit. Avoid noisy laundry rooms and corners where a cat can be cornered by another pet.
- Keep litter about 1–2 inches deep. According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, that's what most cats prefer, along with unscented, finer-textured litter.

If a cat that used the box suddenly stops, see your vet first. Urinary problems are common and need prompt treatment, especially in male cats.
