Our in-depth look

Who it's for

Healthy adult dogs that do well on a mainstream, grain-inclusive kibble and could use a break from chicken-heavy recipes. The salmon base and the large 30 lb bag make it practical for medium and large dogs, or homes with more than one dog.

Who should skip it

Dogs with a fish allergy, puppies (choose a growth formula), and dogs whose vet has recommended a limited-ingredient or prescription diet.

Tips

Change foods gradually over 7–10 days, mixing a little more of the new food into the old each day. This avoids most stomach upsets. Store the bag rolled shut, or tip it into an airtight bin, and finish it within about six weeks of opening for best freshness.

Questions owners ask

Why are some kibble pieces darker?

Those are Blue Buffalo's LifeSource Bits, a separate cold-formed piece with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Some dogs eat around them; that's normal.

Is it grain-free?

No. It includes brown rice and other whole grains, which suit most dogs well.
